Hello! I'm a Passionate and Motivated musician who loves working with students. I recently graduated from Berklee College of Music with a degree in Contemporary Writing and Production. I have enjoyed teaching everything from theory to composition/songwriting to piano and voice Writing and recording pieces has been the highlight of my career. I’ve had the opportunity to write for a wide range of ensembles from Big Band to Orchestra.. I have even had the opportunity to write and record a piece for the Boston Symphony Orchestra
My experience goes back to High School when I would give casual tutoring sessions to friends. In college I started teaching lessons in theory and composing/songwriting. I like to encourage students to get on a practicing schedule especially for younger students as it helps them get more interested in the instrument. I like to start with modern pop/rock styles to get the student interested in the instrument then mix in Jazz so we can talk about more complex theory and also mix in a little classical so we can talk about technique and form.
For beginning piano students I like to start with Mona Rejino’s Essential Elements Piano Theory - Level 1 then once they have learned the basics I’ll find out whatever the student is interested in and then tailor my lessons towards that. With people who know a little I’ll try to find out what they are interested I then tailor my lessons towards that.
With beginning voice students I’ll start with Andres Andrade Absolute Beginners – Voice. Once they get the basics down I’ll find out what they’re interested in and tailor my lessons around that. And with all intermediate students I will find out where they want to go. If the student isn’t having fun I’m not doing my job.
I usually try to set small goals for my students each week especially for kids as a new instrument can seem like a daunting task. Something I like to do is encouraging a students own creativity and get them to try writing their own pieces or songs. Something I find helps a lot especially with kids is acknowledging their accomplishments because it will encourage them to progress in learning. Another thing that works a lot with kids is making a game out of practicing, these kinds of things will really access their creativity.
