BA, University of Washington, Music Education
I have always been (since Junior Year of high school) a performing musician. I began my formal education at Cornish School of Allied Arts in Seattle as Classical Cello major, moved to their Jazz Department as a Bassist and then to the University of Washington to complete my degree in Music Education. I have played for audiences all over the U.S., Canada and select places in Europe. It would be simpler to list the musical styles I can't play rather than those that I can. What this means to my students is that I bring a 'music from all over the world' understanding to my teaching. This is especially useful in today's musical culture - which, through the internet draws on styles and ideas from anywhere and everywhere on Earth. I am always excited to teach this stuff!!
Who doesn't like to feel good about themselves? My experiences have shown me that students who achieve successes with their music feel that way. They are better people and they are better musicians. I have taught high school students who went from having no identity in the student body society to becoming proud of themselves, walking the halls with their heads held high and a smile on their faces. This, to me is the magic of music - and my focus as an Instructor. I include many opportunities to achieve success!
Artistic pursuits (like becoming a Bass Player) ALL have two common methods. First, one develops their Techniques and Technical Skills. Second, one uses those techniques and skills to express themselves as a musician - that is, YOU PLAY MUSIC. My Teaching Method follows these guidelines. If it sounds simple, it is! Sounds like fun, doesn't it?
We - meaning me as Instructor and you as Student - will be getting together for one purpose. It is your development as a musician. My role - and this is also my Approach to Teaching - is to connect with you in a Real-Time environment where I will consistently assess your skill level as it relates to your individual musical goals. I treat each of my students as the unique person they are. My Teaching Style is designed around this and guarantees success - my Student gets what they want (and, most often, even more) and I have the opportunity and pleasure of helping them achieve it.
