I am a second generation musician who has the passion and desire to share the art of piano playing to my students. My love for the piano stems from my family's musical history, where my father and aunt introduced the classics to me at the tender age of 5. As I discover the beauty of piano playing throughout my high school years, I decided to enroll in the music education program at the University of the Virgin Islands. There, I performed with the university's concert choir, concert band, and jazz band in many musical programs. I also participated in the music department tutorial program, where I assisted students who enrolled in beginning courses; such as music theory I, II; and intro to keyboarding I, II.
Upon my college credits and experience, I decided to apply as a music teacher in both the parochial and public school systems in the U.S. Virgin Islands. My years of service extend to over 15 years of encouraging young students to appreciate the art of music. This confers my teaching position within the public school system as piano lab facilitator, junior choir director, chairman of the music department, and member of the school improvement team. My experience also extends to summer programs such as the Virgin Islands Music Academy, where I taught piano lessons to children ages 5-12. Upon my retirement and relocation to Atlanta in 2012, I established private lessons at my home and online.
There are two selected teaching methods that I confer with in order to select the most appropriate method for my students. For my beginning students, I select Schaum (Books 1-3) for piano lessons, and Benners Book One for theory lessons. The Schaum methods offers bright and color-coded books, which reflects that various learning levels. Once the students have attained the basic keyboard and theory fundamentals, the students will be given an assessment of their mastery, they will advance to the immediate level. For students starting at the immediate level, an oral and written pre assessment will be given in order to observe their musical knowledge. At this point, I select Benners Book Two and Three for their theory lessons, and Hal Leonard's books on pop and classical music. For young adults, I focus on their musical interests and guide my instruction to offer lessons that are fun and engaging.
It is my desire to encourage each student to enjoy the art of piano playing. This is done by making each piano lesson exciting and rewarding. Acknowledging their accomplishments is a priority within my teaching style. Furthermore, I enjoy accompanying my students with their piano lessons, guiding them through their challenges, as well as, encouraging and supporting them to do their best. Every student learns at different pace and interests. For this reason, I take my time in teaching my lessons, making sure that my students feels confident that they have mastered every technique introduced.
Great teacher, My daughter enjoys her instruction and actually completes her homework assignments the same day. She teaches music theory first which is very important. Our classes are 30 minutes however she will spend additional time with your child if required. Nice lady.
Ryan has been having fun learning his music lessons, The teacher is very flexible with scheduling. I would recommend Ms. Geraldine C. to other students who are interested in piano classes.
