I recently graduated with my Bachelors Degree in Flute Performance from the University of Florida in Spring 2018. GO GATORS!!! I also have a minor in Disabilities in Society and took pre-nursing courses. I have decided to pursue a Music Therapy certification and Masters Degree in Music Therapy at Florida State University starting in Fall 2018. One of my greatest passions is teaching students, especially music students! Taking private lessons in middle school and high school really helped me to excel in flute performance and gain a deep love of music. Whether a student is still in school or just wants to learn the flute as a hobby, I can help them achieve their goals! I believe knowing music and playing an instrument can help cognitive functioning in all other subject areas and can improve overall quality of life!
I have been a private tutor/teacher to public, private, and homeschooled elementary students since 2017. I focus on specific subjects with certain students, but some students receive instruction in all subjects including music. I am currently teaching 2 beginning piano students. I have taught occasional private flute lessons for high school students throughout my undergraduate studies and last summer, I ran flute sectionals during a local high school's band camp. I was also section leader in my high school wind ensemble. It has been a great experience to teach students from varying schooling types and I am able to adjust my teaching strategies depending on what a student is used to. For example, many homeschooled students prefer online learning, so it is important to cater to that. It is also very important to me to offer all students a productive and engaging learning experience regardless of any learning disability such as dyslexia, ADHD, autism, etc. I absolutely love teaching no matter what the age! I will always try my best to make learning a fun experience because this will help to develop a deep passion for both the flute and music in general. Whether a student is a beginner, intermediate, or advanced, I always strive to use positive reinforcement, interactive games or activities, and kindness towards my students.
I will typically alter my lesson plans according to each student's needs and goals. I love using method books and even beginning band books. For true beginners, it is so important to develop a strong foundation for breathing, posture, embouchure, and finger position. For example, to help practice deep breathing, I have my students lay down on the ground with a book on their stomach. Then, I will ask them to breath while trying to move the book up and down. This is great to develop good breathing habits and it is not a bad ab workout either! I have a selection of solos that range all different levels. Working on solos improves all aspects of playing including dynamics, tone, rhythm, and pitch.
Most of my students are playing the flute or piano for an extracurricular/hobby activity. Therefore, I do not want any student to view lessons as work. Above all else, lessons should be fun! I want to challenge my students but never overwhelm them. I work with students at their own pace and try to make the environment as fun and as laid-back as I can. I love playing alongside my students so they are not always playing alone because sometimes playing by yourself in front of a teacher can be stressful. Most importantly, I believe positive reinforcement is the best teaching tool out there. Acknowledging achievements will help to give students confidence in that they're doing.
