Master's of Music in Composition, Hunter College, 1998
Overview:
Music is truly a wonderful thing in our world and it truly enhances our lives in many different ways. I believe that everyone can benefit deeply from it one way on another. In my teaching, I tailor the lessons according to each student's unique sensitivities and musical intuitions, always striving towards a balance between discipline and creativity. I always enjoy sharing my love and enthusiasm for music with others and I strongly feel that learning music at any level should be a fun, creative and enjoyable process.
EXPERIENCE
I've been teaching for over 30 years now and have pretty much enjoyed the process all along.I enjoy sharing my love of music, encouraging and seeing students discover the many benefits of music, as well as seeing them develop through the years. I've learned over the years to focus on each student's needs and help them develop the best way they can.I've realized that even though there are universal ideas in how to teach ,each person thinks and functions their own way and as a teacher I strive to be sensitive to each individual student.
As a performer I've played in among other venues at, The Blue Note, Iridium, Kitano, Birdland, Alice Tully Hall, and Merkin Hall.
METHODS USED
In pretty much all my students' lessons I would include fun improvisation activities starting from the first lesson.I've found that pretty much everyone has the ability to improvise to a certain degree or another and that unlocking this activity early in training creates a sense of " familiarity" with music and the piano right away.I found that it's a wonderful way to explore the shapes and sounds of the piano through the experience of music first rather than the theoretical aspects of it.
I'm always careful not to allow "bad habits" creep in early in studying and very hard to undo once they creep in.
I use various books and methods depending on level and interests of each student.
LESSON STYLE
Balance between discipline and creativity.
We tend to lean towards certain musical elements at different times of our musical developments. I try to be sensitive to the unique interests of each student, and at the same time use my experience to suggest material that would nourish their particular musical interests.
There are a lot of aspects in learning to play the piano and explore music. Reading , memorizing ,hearing ,performing, composing and improvising.I try to include all of the above in the lessons but again I'm sensitive to the individual interests of each student. Being able to read music is very important so I always focus on that but if a student learns pieces by ear from youtube ,I don't discourage it but rather show him methods of doing that ,and encourage dividing his time between that and other activities like reading music.

Glafkos is a brilliant teacher. He knows just what I need to learn and really focuses on those needs. As a result I really enjoy playing the piano.
