I have enjoyed teaching both private and group music classes for over 15 years. I teach piano and violin . I teach a range of music styles from classical to folk to Mariachi Music. I received my degree from Loyola Marymount University. I have been a member of the Junior Philharmonic, Orchestra of California, Loyola Marymount University Orchestra and Beach Cities Symphony. I currently co-conduct the youth group Mariachi Alma Juvenil. I really enjoyed teaching students and seeing them progress from a novice to an intermediate to an advanced student.
I have taught private lessons, part time for over 15 years. The instruments I teach are the piano and violin. I find that students progress more with regular short intervals of daily practice. I like to make the music fun with songs that children like and then have other books with the basics. For adults I like to start with folk songs, classical music, and showtunes. My students learn with a variety of books from a lesson book to a notes speller to a classical book. The note speller and/or theory books really assist with them understanding the basics of music and making sure they really recognize their notes.
I use different book series, depending on the age and level of the student. For young students, I start with the little Mozart’s book series, lesson books, and workbooks. For older students, I will either use Bastien or Alfred‘s lesson and workbooks. This is mixed with a classical and folk book. We also work on theory, and making sure we know our intervals. Students also learn about key signatures and recognizing sharps and flats. As students progress I try and have them memorize the Circle of Fifths.
I start with the basics and for young students do nursery rhymes and songs they know, this makes it more enjoyable for them. I also ask them what music they would be interested in learning and see if I can find an easy version of this. Lately, the Encanto movie has been popular and I’ve been teaching younger students these songs. Many of my teen students like to learn Beethoven and other classical composers. Everyone of course always wants to learn Fur Elise. I enjoy seeing my students progress from beginner level to intermediate, and to advanced. Many of my students stay with me for lessons from 5 to 10 years.
