As a third generation trumpet player, I am thoroughly passionate about the trumpet. It has taken me all over the county, abroad, and in to rooms with some of the most musically influential people alive today. I graduated from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach in 2016. Having also attended a prestigious arts High School in Los Angeles, I have played in some of the finest venues in the country including Carnegie and Disney Hall. I have recorded and performed with grammy award winning musicians such as Herbie Hancock and Natalie Cole. Although the trumpet has not been the focal point of my life over the past four years, I have recently become entrenched in day to day practice with intention of winning auditions and moving my musical career forward.
I began teaching privately in 2012 during my undergraduate studies. I taught in both private and ensemble settings. I also, spent time teaching music theory in a classroom setting. I treat practicing the trumpet as if it is a part of the student's daily school curriculum so it does not upset the students daily life. I give students progressive weekly goals so that they can consistently build and learn while having fun. Based on nearly twenty years of experience, I will tailor practice routines and weekly targets to each students individual goals and level of commitment. The most important aspect of my teaching style is to make music making a fun and enriching experience.
For young students in first through sixth grade, I start them with the "Rubank Elementary Method for Trumpet or Cornet." Once the student feels comfortable with the basics out of that book, I will introduce recognizable solo repertoire and the Fundamentals for Brass Book by William BIng, which has a focus on fundamental control of the Trumpet. For students in middle school and high school, I will ask them to play and make and assessment based on what I feel will benefit the student the most. Most importantly, I will assign weekly listening for musical inspiration. The best thing for any musician to do is to listen to music for inspiration.
My main goal is to make playing the trumpet fun. I will put music making the at the forefront of each lesson. It is important is to teach and reinforce the fundamentals of trumpet playing so that music making can be a natural process. This style of teaching is applicable at all levels. I will listen to and analyze each students technical and musical ability and tailor a weekly practice regiment that is both efficient and effective. This will allow the student to progress at fun and competitive pace.
