Overview:
I am a pianist with a rich musical background and a passion for teaching. I began my piano studies at Sunhwa Arts Middle School and Sunhwa Arts High School in Seoul, South Korea. Continuing my journey at Hanyang University, I earned a Bachelor's degree in Piano. During my university years, I embarked on my teaching career, which has spanned over 20 years, even after immigrating to the United States. While living in Europe for three years, I continued to teach piano. I organized regular student recitals twice a year, fostering a platform for my students to showcase their talent. Through dedicated instruction, I guided my students to achieve remarkable accomplishments, including securing second place in the prestigious German Piano Competition. Currently, I have returned to the United States and provide private lessons. As a member of the Music Teachers' Association of California (MTAC), I have successfully coached numerous students to earn State Honor awards in the CM (Certificate of Merit) tests. Furthermore, several of my students have achieved second and third place in international piano competitions. I take pride in tailoring individualized lesson plans for my students, focusing on various state tests and competition preparations. Together, we work towards long-term goals and aspirations, nurturing their musical growth and development.
EXPERIENCE
From the time I became a college student at the age of 20, I started part-time piano teaching and have been giving piano lessons to students for over 25 years. I have extensive experience as a kindergarten teacher, church accompanist, piano instructor at church music schools and piano academies. Additionally, I teach over 30 students through private lessons and organize biannual recitals for them. Not only within the United States, but also internationally, I have guided my students to achieve excellent results in various competitions. Particularly for students in California, I annually participate in the State Piano Level Test, ensuring they achieve outstanding results up to the state honor . I am dedicated to teaching with utmost effort.
METHODS USED
For beginner students, I use the Piano Adventure series, and for adults, I utilize Alfred or Adventure Adult books. Intermediate and advanced level students mainly work with individual books dedicated to composers from different eras. Despite having excellent resources, I always strive to personalize the approach and book selection according to each student's needs using a one-on-one customized approach to teaching. I create a yearly plan for each student I receive, which includes foundational piano lessons, preparation for competitions, and special pieces for the Christmas season.
LESSON STYLE
There's nothing more fulfilling than witnessing a student cultivate a genuine love for music. Hence, I prioritize enabling every student to advance according to their individual pace. I foster this by establishing achievable objectives during each lesson, recognizing their achievements to ignite their motivation to excel and further their learning enthusiasm. By identifying their sources of inspiration, I adeptly customize my instruction to cater to their preferences and necessities. I believe that every student possesses infinite potential, and I aspire to nurture their individual talents. Consequently, I consistently strive to provide a balanced mix of encouragement and advice that can motivate them.
