University of Colorado Denver, Guitar Performance
I have been playing guitar for over half of my life and have 5 years of teaching experience. I studied guitar performance at CU Denver and have extensive formal training in music theory and stage performance. My lessons are tailored to fit your needs as a musician of any kind. I'm comfortable teaching just about any style you can think of; some of my strongest styles are metal, jazz, fusion, rock and pop.
I began teaching guitar part time in late high school to just a few students. During college, I expanded my student base to include up to 30 students per week. I also have plenty of experience teaching group lessons of up to 25 children in both lesson and rehearsal formats. I prefer to teach my students using a jazz sensibilty applied all types of music. This brings about a well-rounded and open-minded perspective on both writing and performing in all genres.
I start with pushing students to develop good habits early on in their playing. I like to get my students playing songs in their genre of choice as soon as possible. This method generates interest in their instrument from the very begining. I select their repetoire based on what techniques we are currently working on and find songs that will force them to develop those techniques in order for them to effectively perform each piece. After we learn a few songs in genres they are used to, I like to push my students outside of their comfort zone and learn new songs in genres they may not be familiar with.
I like to start off with all my students--whether adult or child--by finding what music they are passionate about. I then use that information to create a practice routing/repetoire that will drive each individual to practice and grow as a musician. I encourage my students to not only practice often, but practice corectly. After all, practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.
