Master Degree: DePaul University
I am a passionate teacher and performer based in Chicago looking to increase my private studio size. I can teach piano and cello, and I can teach students of all ages, skill levels, and goals. I am recent graduate from the DePaul School of Music where I received my Master's in cello performance. I have been playing both cello and piano for 14 years and I play both instruments at an advanced level. I do not currently have an adequate studio space, but I can teach online and travel to students in the Chicago area.
I have 3 years of teaching experience and 10 years of experience as a performer. I love making and sharing music with others, and I find it extremely rewarding to see a student grow and develop as a musician. I take a calm approach to teaching and work with students according to their goals. Students can bring any music they would like to learn, and I think music should be fun to learn! I have limited experience working with very young children, but I am a patient teacher and I generally work well with children.
For beginners, introductory lesson books are very helpful for teaching the fundamentals of reading and playing music. I take a split approach with students working on basics such as scales/arpeggios along with repertoire so students can develop multiple skills at one time. I approach technique for both cello and piano as the art of releasing tension in the body while achieving the desired sound of the instrument. The goal is to play efficiently and relaxed, as this is the most productive and safe way to make music.
I am an avid believer that a student's personal enthusiasm for learning and improving is the sole catalyst for their development. I do not believe in enforcing practice regiments on students as the motivation to practice should come from within. That being said, it is my job as the teacher to foster the student's passion for music by introducing them to exciting concepts and pieces that can grow their passion. If a student finds a passion in the music, there is no need to push them to practice hours a day; the student will be drawn to the instrument in their free time as I was as a beginning student.
