I have always loved music. I began singing in church when I was only five years old. I began studying the piano when I was eight years old, and was privileged to become the church pianist at fourteen. As a lifelong student of music I have a lengthy music education, including studying the piano at the Birmingham Southern University Conservatory of Music. I have years of experience teaching piano and voice as well as teaching music in both private and public schools. Music is my passion, and I love sharing my passion with students one-on-one.
I was a music education major, so I was trained to teach. Over the years I have taught piano and voice lessons privately and with contractors for over 9 years. I encourage students to practice consistently, and to also enjoy learning. I teach various styles and most of my experience is with beginners to intermediate students. I teach students starting at the age of five to adults. I have vocal techniques that help singers to reach higher notes and sing with comfort. I also have piano techniques that help students to play using the entire range of the keyboard. I look forward to teaching new students of all ages!
When I was growing up beginning piano lessons books were limited. I used the familiar John Thompson series that was quite good. I typically use the Alfred method, although I still like John Thompson, and I also like the Faber method. For adults, I like to use the Alfred books that are specifically for them. Some adults took piano lessons as children and want to take lessons again. I try to find out what he or she is interested in and go from there. Voice students can choose their songs. They can sing any style from pop, gospel, rock, to opera. I like to make music fun.
I am an encourager. I love to brag on students and highlight their strengths. I believe in setting goals and achieving them. For me, teaching one-on-one really helps me to help each student better. I can focus on both strengths and weaknesses and help each child or adult to become more musical. As the students practice they will soon see progress which is uplifting. Students will realize that hard work is just as important as talent when it comes to learning any instrument. Whether I am teaching piano or voice lessons, I can tailor my instruction to the wants an needs of every individual.
Mr. Greg M. was my first pianist instructor. He was great! He introduced the concepts really well and it was easy to understand. He made sight-reading on the piano easy! He's also very kind and understanding. I would recommend Mr. Greg M. to anyone!
