I actually have 4 degrees. I went to San Jose State University and got a bachelors of science in computer electronics and high tech management. Unsatisfied with working in this field I went on to get two more degrees at UCSB, bachelor of arts and music performance and composition. I have been teaching for over 30 years and can explain any concepts that comes my direction. I am a mastermind of helping students especially beginners, at learning this art. I also happen to score in the top 1% of my SAT every time I took it. I have studied with several prominent musicians. Unfortunately they have all passed away at this time. I studied with Don Haas, Charles Gustavson, and Thomas Larada. I am also quite capable of helping students with their college work and helping them succeed in their classes as a tutor for that. I actually finished the final exam for theory in 20 minutes and scored a perfect score in 6 quarters of theory. I know my trade!
I went back to college to be able to do this. After working as an engineer and not feeling satisfied with myself for my work, I went back and retraced my roots and my love of music and piano performance and composition. I have been teaching for 30 years and never get tired of talking about this subject. This subject entails every aspect of the human experience. Entails entails physical, mental, creative, intuitive, logical, auditory, visual, physical and anything else you may be able to think of. I love explaining this topic. I get to use the information I learned, and transfer it to another person in the form of various analogies and explanation methods. It is truly the funnest job I’ve ever had. I don’t mind teaching any age or ability level, but I will tell you that I think if you’re advanced then it speaks for itself and you do not need a teacher. However I will teach anybody.
I typically start students who don’t know how to read music with Kevin Olsen‘s book called “The Perfect Start.” I then supplement that with my own approaches to teaching to note reading, musicianship, theory, sight singing, and composition. After a few months, the student will be transferred over to such books as Fabre and Fabre.” I truly try and streamline a students experience and lessons towards pieces and music they are interested in playing. There is no one set method after the first couple of months. Every students Lesson is individualized.
I approach teaching separately and individually. Every students lesson is personalized. I can match any level of discipline, seriousness, and interest a student may have. I do not mind this. I realize this is a personal endeavor as well as a professional endeavor on both the students part and my part. I enjoy using my abilities to explain musical concepts. I am an absolute mastermind at this. I have had lessons where I have made students friends of mine for the rest of my life. I have had students that were completely serious and college oriented, not interested in being my friend in any way . That did not bother me. If the student was that serious, I can relate to that on a certain level. It is also fun to be able to get out and see different sites and people throughout the day whether it’s at their house or mine or on the Internet. There’s a lot of diversity in this job. That adds to its enjoyment.
