I began playing guitar at the age of 13 in New York. I'm self taught but have had some formal instruction. While in college in Virginia I continued my musical journey playing with local musicians. When I graduated college I moved to New Jersey where I began Gigging with local musicians. Later I formed my own band fronted by singer Scarlet Moore and occasional performances by Jeannie Bryson ( daughter of Dizzy Gillespie ). After the completion of that band I began to continue to play and teach students privately and at Union County College. I have always enjoyed playing all styles of music and teaching students. Presently I front my own band called EQUINOX that is jazz fusion.
I began playing guitar professionally in New Jersey in 1996. I have been teaching private lessons part time for the last 10yrs. I instructed a guitar course at Union County College for students ages 9 to 17 years of age. This course was an introductory course that taught students the basics of guitar. Students learned many different styles of music. At the completion of the course students gave a performance to their friends and family. I have also taught many private lessons. My main objective is to encourage students to enjoy music and find the confidence to want to practice and continue on their musical journey.
I have worked with many students on different levels. I teach beginners how to hold and tune guitars and then how to play basic melodies. I believe that it is important to jump right in and start playing, that was how I learned. Students at this beginner level will learn how to play melodies on 1 string. Later as they progress I start to show them basic chords.
For the intermediate level students they learn how to play scales and chords based on the CAGED method. I always keep each lesson based on actual music so all that is learned is applied to making music. I believe that you must learn something and then apply it to a real song for that concept to stick and more importantly so you understand how music works.
The advanced payer learns music theory, scales, chords, song structure and cycle of 5ths as well as how music works and how to compose. I always see what level the student is at and then I continue from their to help progress in their musical journey.
My style is very basic. I believe that it is very important to play music. A lot can be lost on the practicing and theory. I like to develop the love and passion for music. I believe it is important to learn scales, chords and theory but you have to hear and feel music. My lessons are tailored to the ability of the students. I try to find what style the student likes and begin from there. It is important to encourage the students as well as help them along the way. Playing music is an ongoing thing but more importantly you must want to play music each time your pick up your instrument. I believe that you must be very structured in your practice in order to grow. I enjoy playing the guitar and hope to pass that along to my students.
