My name is Gregg, I like to define music as aural changes over time, a change people listen to regardless of their personal styles. The teaching of music is then a transmittal of a new language with all its nuances. It is these changes that first attracted me to music. I really started my career in music at a concert for a whole high school. I "reached the wall" and went over it, all my playing seemed effortless and still in sync with the rest of that venue. At the same time I decided to devote my life to music. And to instill this quality to as many students as possible. I later was made head of the Mannes Guitar Ensemble and thoroughly enjoyed forming the ensemble, making the arrangements, and hearing the results. Lately have been writing 6 solo partitas for piano.
EXPERIENCE
My start as a full-time multimedia teacher was with a company called Rivoli Music. I had taught 25-30 Japanese women... It got tight in places (language) but it was mostly pleasure having the students' Photoshop, Flash, then make FLV video with original soundtracks. I had enough experience after 8+ years of working and teaching to become a full-time teaching musician again... I loved showing my original work to the public (C.E.I.G.), and the public to the classroom to studies on how it was constructed. I felt how many got it correct and was thankful towards them. Now I was giving individual lesson though this period including piano and guitar, and I love it!.
METHODS USED
Set a specific time every day/week. Make sure the student doesn't eats a hour before the lesson. Put on your mind to "receive" mode and that there aren't any distractions in the room. If a section of a piece is problematic then we would work on that part first. A metronome can be helpful when practicing. If possible, internally sing the part you are playing. Dynamics exercise on the pieces section - take parts and play them from p to ff and down again. The instructor can play one hand while the student plays the other. I use Sibelius to create graded level exercises from its database. If the student has a particular song they want to play, I would present it to the class for a choral sight singing.
LESSON STYLE
"The student is the center of our space - our goal is to direct our student towards any worthy teacher". The student breaths life into the system and its our responsibility to keep him to keep him healthy. The tempo is based on how advanced the student is.
[Example First: - see how flute is set up
Second - show basic fingering
Third - first embouchure
Fourth - first sound
Fifth - first hold
Sixth - first release].
These sentences can be adapted to any instrument. When the student repeats the sequence they will strengthen the whole chest and throat area. After which they can take the sequence over again or move higher to go to the next section.
I realize children are different so I might arrange the tables based on levels and give out several scores to help the students feel uninhibited with group support. Founded with love through music!
