I'm a voice and guitar instructor with over 15 years teaching all ages. I also teach music theory, songwriting and production. I have a passion for teaching music while fostering students' development through skill-building exercises and rewards. I also encourage my students to perform live and will help them find opportunities to pursue their goals.
My background: I began studying music under a professional opera singer at the age of 12 which culminated in me landing a role on Broadway. I then majored in music and graduated from Wheaton College, MA in 2008 with a BA in Music. I then received my MA in Composition from the Longy School of Music in Boston, where I had the privilege of writing and performing alongside famous artists.
My students would say that I'm very positive and uplifting. I am a natural motivator and father, so I know how to keep my students engaged!
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons 15 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students ever since. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument.
I've also found that if a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I'm not doing my job! I keep lessons light and fun but encourage students to perform and compete so they can work towards a goal, showcase their progress, and feel good about their accomplishments to stay motivated.
METHODS USED
Regardless of the instrument or competency level, I always incorporate ear training, music theory exercises, and games into each lesson. With the help of method books, videos,.and group sessions, I cater the curriculum to each student's strengths and weaknesses.
Live performances are crucial to fully understanding any instrument, and so I encourage my students to perform live as much as possible--and I help them find those opportunities. I also make sure each student is well-organized and keeps a log of all assignments, so students (and parents) can track their progress.
LESSON STYLE
I try to make sure every lesson is upbeat, fun, high energy, and very focused. I use musical exercises, games, visuals and online media to ensure a fun atmosphere.
I also implement awards to acknowledge accomplishments, particularly when a student reaches milestones or achievements that we clearly define during the beginning stages of lessons.
Performance practice is another key element of my teaching style as I incorporate elements of live performances which helps the student prepare.
