2009-2013-Hartt School of Music Merit Scholarship
Overview:
I am a dedicated teacher who enjoys working with students of all levels. I graduated from the Hartt School of Music of the University of Hartford in 2013 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance. The operatic roles that I performed while at the Hartt School include Leila in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe and The Strawberry Woman in Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. Since graduating from the Hartt School, I have sung roles with Hartford Opera Theater in Hartford, CT as well as Haymarket Opera Company in Chicago, IL, among others. I frequently collaborated with various instrumentalists in recital around New England, in particular with a contemporary music ensemble based in Hartford, Connecticut. I teach a range of styles of singing, including classical, jazz, musical theater, pop, and folk. .
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching while at the Hartt School; where, after taking a number of courses in vocal pedagogy, I gave voice lessons to music students majoring in other instruments. I also tutored beginner and intermediate ear training while at the Hartt School. Following graduation, I taught private voice at a music and dance center in central Connecticut. For the last several years, I have been teaching at a number of community-based schools around Connecticut, including the Community Music School of Essex, Middlesex Music Academy, and Charles' Music Center. Since moving to NYC, I have also started teaching at the New City School of Music in New City, NY. I find that teaching has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have had while in music, and I often feel that I have learned as much from teaching as from my own study. I firmly believe that it is as important that students learn basic musicianship skills such as sight-singing and music theory as learning their instrument of choice, and I try to incorporate these elements, among others, in voice lessons.
METHODS USED
I start off all beginning students by teaching them the fundamentals of singing. If students have taken lessons in the past, I work on reviewing fundamental concepts with them. When a student first begins lessons, I typically spend more time on helping to build the student's technique than on repertoire, and as the student progresses, I split the lesson more equally between the two components. I believe in motivating students by helping them learn the repertoire to which they are most attracted, though I do also give them repertoire of styles with which they may be less familiar in order to help them solidify their technique. I do my best to keep lessons engaging, interesting and challenging, regardless of what point the student is at in their study.
LESSON STYLE
I feel that while it is important that students make progress, every student must move at his or her own pace. I like to set goals for students in terms of technical growth and potential repertoire, and believe in acknowledging the improvements a student makes, whether over time or in the moment. Though it is wonderful to see a student gradually understand a concept, there is nothing more exciting for a teacher than seeing a student have an "Aha!" moment. I hope that as students grows in their knowledge of singing and of their own instruments, they will also grow in their love and appreciation of music.
