Overview:
My musical background began when I was just a child, learning how to play the guitar. My father, also a musician, told it to me straight when he said "learn how to sing and play the bass and you will never be out of a gig!". I took this advice and tried my best. I also went to the best teachers, too. I studied music, practiced along with my favorite songs, and plucked out chords and melodies until I moved on to music theory, sight-reading, and composition throughout my school years, eventually attending a Jazz specific playing studio to further my musical education. There wasn't a typical "graduation". My skills were backed up by real-world playing experience. Recitals, gigs, studio recording sessions, rehearsal, musicals, and good old garage bands filled my first musical 10 years! My teaching experience specializes in teaching private one-on-one music lessons to students of all ages. My focus is on helping students develop their musical skills, build confidence, and have fun while learning. I teach a variety of instruments, styles, and music theory, and also provide resources and advice to help students reach their musical goals. I am for a safe, encouraging, and inspiring environment, physically or digitally, for my students to learn and grow musically.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching bass and guitar for over 10 years and I absolutely love it! It is my passion to be able to share my knowledge and experience with students of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. I specialize in performance, theory, technique, and improvisation. During my lessons, I tailor the information to the individual student so they can reach their desired goals. My teaching style is engaging and interactive, helping the student to become more confident and motivated in their playing. I strive to create a fun and relaxed learning environment, where students can explore and express themselves through music.
METHODS USED
When I teach, I strive to create custom lesson plans and materials that are tailored to each student's unique needs and goals. My methods involve taking the time to get to know my students and understanding their individual strengths and weaknesses. I use this information to create lesson plans that are realistic and achievable based on the amount of time the student has to practice. We will be making music quickly! I believe in creating an environment of positive reinforcement and clear communication between the student and myself. I focus on helping every student reach their full potential, while also providing them with the necessary tools to reach their goals.
LESSON STYLE
I teach the electric bass, double bass (acoustic or upright bass), and the guitar up to a professional playing level. College and performance prepatory are also personal skills I can help with. I am also well-versed in buying (and selling!) instruments for various playing levels. I can help you find an instrument if you are just starting out or find one of your dreams! Beyond this, I am capable of helping my students set up their bass or guitar for optimum playing performance. When it comes to teaching stringed instruments, I take an individualized approach to each student. Every student is different, so I like to tailor my teaching method to the student’s needs and skill levels. My goal with teaching is to help each student reach their goals and express themselves musically. For example, In terms of technique for both hands, I emphasize the importance of being mindful of the movements being used. I give my students exercises to help them become accustomed to the different motions and fingerings associated with their instruments. I also encourage my students to practice with and without a metronome to ensure accuracy and to internalize without. I also like to focus on music theory, improvisation, and composition. I believe that understanding the basics of music theory will give students the tools they need to express themselves in a musical setting. I often provide my students with tips and tricks to help them create their own musical pieces, as well as exercises to help them become comfortable with improvising. I love seeing my students reach their goals and become more confident in their musical abilities. My passion for teaching music with instruments comes from my desire to help my students grow and become the best musicians they can be.
