Multiple Director's Awards - 2008-2017 John Frederick Oberlin Scholarship - 2013 Invited to PErform with Shen Yun Orchestra
As an instructor and musician I have explored a huge variety of different musical styles froma roudn the world, as well as the cognitive fundamentals of learning. I try to preapre my students with learning tools that will allow them to continue improving even after my time as their instructor is over. I focus especially on building an understanding of how and why to acquire strong fundamentals, so that we can collaboratively drive their learning. As a performing professional musician, I've had experience in choirs, bands, orchestras, and a multitude of other diverse groups, as well as extensive experience as a recording engineer and producer.
I have taught music lessons both in college as well as for several years before that. I have experience coaching chamber groups, performing and running groups, as well as teaching both musical and non-musical subjects at a variety of levels, including one-on-one tutoring. I base all of my methods on proven cognitive research and fun yet rigorous hands-on experience. When I was younger, I experience many struggles as a musician, and had to work both hard and smart to overcome my more immediately talented peers. My approach to teaching is never to assume a student is bad or lacking talent if something does not come quickly to them. I always try to empathize and work alongside my students to discover and develop their specific proficiencies.
I usually prefer a phone call or use the first lesson to guage the interest level, previous experience, and goals of the student and/or parents. I have used a variety of teaching books and methods, and will generally try to contour my methods to the needs of students while also keeping costs low. I do not often rquire students to purchase expensive music books, and prefer using repetoire and music directly relevant to students long and short-term goals. For beginning students I always help them build fundamentals with a focus on their particular physiology and musical brain in relation to their instrument. For more advanced students, I may choose to focus on advanced musicianship or theoretical understandings of pieces to enhance their playing if their playing is at a sufficiently advanced level.
I focus particularly on comfort adn compassion on my lessons. I always want to help students develop and discover their own most efficient way of learning. I check in with students regularly before, during and after lessons to make sure I am tailoring the lesson to their needs as much as possible. I believe in positive reinforcement, and if my students aren't practicing, I need to make my lessons more engaging! I also help students set out goals and before and during every lesson, especially the first one. I want my students to know what to expect from me and themselves, so that we can maintain clear and constant communication. I find this is the most efficient way to enable happy, successful students!
