My name is Mr. Gus R. I am from Dorchester, South Carolina. I currently hold a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music from Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. Additionally, I am also a recipient of a Masters of Arts in Teaching degree from the prestigious Purdue University Global. I started playing drums in church at the age of seven. I knew instantly that my gift was a gift from God. As a teenager and young adult, I played both snare and single tenor drum for both my collegiate and high school (Woodland High) alma maters. I currently serve as the chorus teacher and percussion instructor for the Randolph County School system in Cuthbert, Georgia. My love for music and drums will always remain steadfast.

For woodwind and brass players we can start by using the Essential Elements Books. This book includes warmups, etudes, and performance pieces. As an educator, I follow the John Hattie Model in which each lesson has a learning intention followed by success criteria. The success criteria help me gauge whether or not students have mastered the material or should I reteach. Also, I I model first and then play the student. Then, in tired the student loose on their own and monitor and facilitate as they work through the repertoire.

The success criteria help me gauge whether or not students have mastered the material or should I reteach. Also, I use concepts and song examples in which students are familiar. Bringing together these concepts makes learning music easier because students make a connection to something they love in other avenues. Music coincides with many other subjects such as math, history, and science.
