2015- Boston Conservatory at Berklee Scholarship
Started playing the cello at the age of nine, I grew up pursuing my passion as a classical performer, and now have passion in sharing it to others. I graduated at Boston Conservatory at Berklee with a Bachelors of Music Performance. At the age of 15, I had my first stage debut at the Winners Solo Concerto Performance with the W Philharmonic Orchestra. I’ve had recitals, won prizes at competitions and concours, performed in orchestras, chamber, opera, and musical theatre. Along with classical music, I also love playing modern music, and have performed with church choirs and bands. Growing up, I moved to different countries and have come from mixed cultural backgrounds. I'm bilingual in English and Korean so I teach my students in both languages.
My teaching experience goes back to my college days, as I began to start teaching private lessons, and currently still teaching students. I have taught students from beginner to advanced levels, from age 9 to adult. I have taught face-to-face in studio lessons, and also through online lessons. Not only have I taught music private lessons, I have experiences in teaching in a classroom, at a kindergarten and elementary as a substitute and a main teacher. Having many experiences with little ones allowed me to become familiar with how to interact and specifically teach young ages. I am opened to bring on new students of all ages!
Having the basic knowledge in music and techniques in playing are very important tools to have as a performer. I typically start with the Suzuki method for beginners and intermediates. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce a solo repertoire or other music pieces appropriate to the student’s interest. I also use other exercise books as part of the lesson to improve the student’s sight reading, ear training, and technique skills on the instrument.
Seeing my students enjoy and grow in their passion for music is the most rewarding part in my teaching. I can be a tiger teacher but at the same time be very patient, flexible, supporting, and open to listen to my students. I value communication with my students during every lesson, making sure if they are following along. I consistently ask questions to my students about how they feel, their opinions, or what they’re struggling with. Knowing how my students are progressing is very helpful in how I can effectively help my students. As a teacher, it is most important for my students to be constantly learning and being fully engaged, while also having fun.
