Hi there! My name is Haiyang. I am a flute performer and teacher, who enjoys sharing my love and knowledge of music through online teaching. I started playing the flute in 1999 and have been teaching since 2014. I received my Master of Music degree in Flute Performance at Florida State University, where I also taught flute lessons and music classes as a Graduate Teaching Assistant. Prior to that, I acquired my Bachelor of Music degree at University of North Texas, and I taught at a number of public secondary schools as well as my private studio in Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area.
I started my private flute studio in 2014, and my students range from 8-65 years of age including middle school players, college students, and adult enthusiasts. Depending on their needs and goals, I help them building the fundamentals of their playing, preparing for auditions and performances, exploring new repertoire, and developing their understanding and expression of the music. I also provide supplemental materials for basic ear training, music theory, and music history in addition to flute training to help them becoming a better musician. For my students from the public middle and high schools, we spend much of our time building the skills for advancing in the all-region audition and UIL contests. For my students at Florida State University, we spent our energy optimizing their playing approach, deepening their understanding of various styes of music, and developing their musicianship.
I encourage students to explore music from various eras and styles and sometimes supplement the teaching with reading, listening, and watching materials to make sure they have a comprehensive understanding of the playing and an enriched experience with music. For beginning students, I typically start with the method book "Flute 101" by P.A. Louke and P. George. As the student progresses on the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for them. For experienced players, I choose technical materials and repertoire according to what they would like to work on.
As a teacher, I value the students' uniqueness and work collaboratively with them in setting goals and plans while they progress at their own pace. My goal is to instill confidence by celebrating their successes and acknowledging their accomplishments. When students have setbacks, I encourage them to keep trying and offer new ideas to assist them in working through their challenges. As a musician, I love sharing my appreciation of music and skills of flute playing. I aim to bring out the musicality within each player. I look forward to meeting and growing with my students together as musicians.
