Thank you for visiting my profile! I am a pianist and teacher seeking new students to share my passion for music with. I have played the piano for twenty years and am a full time piano teacher. I graduated from Columbia University with a Master of the Arts in Music Education, and focused my research on incorporating mindfulness into the music learning environment. My students are very important to me, and I am constantly thinking of ways to make learning more effective and exciting for them. When I am not teaching and practicing piano, I am probably doing yoga, reading, or writing.
I began teaching private lessons during high school to children in my neighborhood, and found it to be so rewarding. I worked with one student in particular who made me realize my passion for teaching. My lessons helped her progress in both musical and extramusical ways that meant so much to her and her family. Soon after this experience, I began studying aspects of music therapy and instructing yoga, which added a holistic element to my style of teaching. Over the years I have taught children and adults, and worked with students with disabilities. I enjoy working with students of all ages and abilities. It is important to me to ask my students what type of music they listen to, and prioritize teaching certain aspects of music based on both what students seem most inclined to learn, as well as what they need to better understand.
I like to get beginning students comfortable with their instrument and playing music as soon as possible. I use common method books such as Faber, as well as newer ones aimed to younger students such as Wunderkeys. I teach traditional reading and music theory, but also include a wide variety of outside materials to get students learning the necessary vocabulary to be their own observer. Watching videos of famous pianists, including repertoire the student is motivated to learn, composing original music, and creating customized practice plans are just a few of my teaching methods.
I aim to foster a learning environment that is student-centered, and tailor my teaching style to each of my students individually. I encourage my students to feel comfortable freely expressing their musical ideas and exploration, and give them the knowledge and skills to do that. Dramatic play and having fun are integral when working with my youngest learners. The best teachers are always learning from their students and improving upon their craft, and I love that having the opportunity to do that everyday.
