I am a performer and artist who is passionate about making art and theater accessible to children anywhere. I recently graduated from NYU Tisch School of the Arts with a B.F.A. in Drama. Although my training had primarily been in musical theatre and acting, I've been taking voice lessons ever since I was five years old and have studied music theory since my time at the Chicago High School for the Arts. I've performed at the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture in Chicago, trained at musical theatre programs such as Broadway Collective and Gathered, toured around multiple middle schools in Chicago as the lead in an original musical created by a classmate, and rehearsing for an upcoming performance at the venue 54 Below in NYC.
Although I don't have much experience teaching in a classroom setting specially, through my high school years I've been a part of different classes and shows that have given me the chance to teach children how to act and perform as well as increase their confidence in their own voice. Like I mentioned before, I originated a role in a musical that was created by a fellow classmate of mine, and that show eventually toured around multiple middle schools and kindergartens. After we performed, we would have a talk back with the kids where they would ask different questions about acting and my experience with singing, and it filled my heart to see so many kids be entranced by theater and inspired to be in the arts themselves. I had another class i high school that focused on bringing arts to different communities around Chicago, and once every couple weeks we would go to a different middle school and play improv games, create scenes, and sing with the children of the schools so that they can learn how to embrace who they are through performance.
I would begin each lesson with a vocal warmup so that I can see where their tone is placed and if they are an alto/soprano/tenor/etc. I would ask what genres they are interested in or what types of music they like. If they have a song they'd want to learn, we would practice that song and work on technique so that they can perform it in a healthy and confident way. The techniques I would focus on are breathing through the diaphragm, knowing where to place the voice, and making sure their posture is allowing for full control of their voice. I would also incorporate music theory and ask if they are interested in reading sheet music as well, either for choir or for auditions.
I would want nothing more than for kids to be excited and determined when beginning every class with me, which is why I wanna keep things fun and energizing always! Especially teaching online mostly, I know how easy it can to stay unfocused or disengage, which is why the material we cover will always be catered to what the student feels comfortable with while also being challenging enough for their skill level at the moment. I am patient and always willing to either slow the learning pace down or make lessons more simple if the child doesn't understand or is struggling, their confidence in themselves is what's most important at the end of the day and I only want to increase that!
