Overview:
I'm a multi-instrumentalist/vocalist with a fresh, practical approach to teaching, based on my 27-year on-stage perfoming experience. Everything I share with students, I get them to apply it directly in the songs they love, which not only shows them how things work musically, but also keeps them excited and motivated about learning music. Fronting my own band for 20 years, writing/arranging songs, and performing them all over the world has given me the insight into applying music concepts into real songs, and real musical situations. I play/teach guitar, bass guitar, harmonica, and I'm also a songwriter and vocalist. I also have a BA in Music Performance from St. Thomas University, as well as a BA in Communications.
EXPERIENCE
I've taught private lessons, group lessons, workshops, and youth music camps since 1998. I tailor my lessons to each student, according to his/her own goals and musical tastes. I like to get to know my students and find out what/who they like musically, then use that knowledge to demonstrate the things we're working on so they can hear it in action. If students want to write their own songs, we apply what we've learned to their songs too. I've found that applying what you learn in music you love keeps you motivated and excited about music!
METHODS USED
I don't have just ONE method...because every student has different likes, and different goals, they need personalized lessons. Some enjoy music theory, others prefer to just learn a more basic approach. Since I learned formally (in school/lessons) and informally (by ear, self-taught and playing onstage), I can give students whichever method suits their goals, with as much or as little theory as they are comfortable with. I specialize in playing by ear, which is essential for students who want to play onstage or make music with others, without worrying about sheet music.
LESSON STYLE
Over the years I had musical mentors share knowledge with me, so it is so rewarding to share knowledge with students. I love it when students get "light bulbs", or "a-ha" moments. Because I tailor lessons to the students' individual goals, I love to show them things that are practical and help them achieve those goals. My teaching style is very personal and conversational, as opposed to formal and "classroom-like". I think this helps students feel comfortable with me, and that they feel like they are learning from an experienced friend, not just a "teacher".
