I am passionate and highly motivated about music and teaching music. I have been studying piano for over 10 years now. I graduated from Weber State University (WSU) with a Bachelor's of Music in Keyboard Pedagogy. I have performed many times in solo and ensemble works in different settings during my education. I had the opportunity to perform a Bach Concerto for Two harpsichords with WSU's orchestra. I have always loved making music and sharing it with others. It is my hope to help my students find their love of music and help them find joy in sharing it with people they love.
My teaching experience mainly comes from my two years of teacher training as part of my degree in keyboard pedagogy. I would assist in teaching a group class of beginners ages 5-6 and an adult class for music majors. I have also taught privately in person and online to both adults and children. I am excited to continue my teaching experience as I learn more about myself and how to be the best teacher I can be. It brings me great joy when I can help my students feel accomplished in their ability to play music they enjoy. Music is fun and it is my desire to have my students feel the same in lesson and at home!
I am mainly using Alfred's Premier Piano series in my curriculum for beginning students who are children. I include material from other method books that help meet the needs I want for my students. It is very important for any student at any level to have a strong technical foundation starting with proper posture and hand shape. When learning new songs and pieces, I start off with aural experiences for the students, especially when rhythm is difficult. Music is fun so lessons need to be fun for the students. I like to use little games or even flash cards to help teach or reinforce a new concepts for the students.
One thing I really enjoy about teaching is seeing my students find their love for music. This is why it is important for each student to feel accomplished at each lesson. This can be done by helping the student make and meet realistic goals that helps them see their progress and feel like they are continually moving forward. I always make a point to acknowledge and explain what specific things the students do right. This fuels their self-confidence and helps reinforce what they already know. I also try to make lessons fun for the students so they will want to keep coming back. Games or activities can be used to help student reach goals and learn new concepts that they will remember the rest of their lives.
