I am an instructor whose passion is teaching students of all ages the love of music on the piano. In 2020, I graduated from Christopher Newport University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Piano Performance under Dr. Benjamin Corbin. While getting this degree, I realized my passion for teaching and went to get a graduate degree at George Mason University to get a Masters in Music with a concentration in keyboard pedagogy under Dr. Anna Balakerskia. During these degrees, I had the opportunity to perform for and with many incredible musicians, including a semester in Europe.
My teaching journey began in and throughout college in 2016, when I began teaching lessons privately, and after receiving my second degree, I teach from my in-home studio. Since I began studying at a young age, I have a special love and passion for helping my students with the piano. Teaching students from five years to 75 years, I am thankful my teaching experience has been very diverse; I enjoy the challenge of an advanced student, and the energy of a new student; always looking to bring on new students of all ages.
I am a firm believer in having each student learn basic scales, starting with five finger patterns for beginners, since a solid grasp on this technique will aid them in learning any piece. For beginning younger students, I start teaching them from a method book that best suits their learning style. Since each student is different, one method does not fit every student, and I have taught Alfred's Premier Performer, Mayron Cole Piano Method, Hal Leonard, and more. For an older beginner student, Alfred Piano Basics is a go-to method. For both a child and adult beginner, the more they learn, the more I begin to supplement with other pieces. When a student comes to me who is not a beginner, I keep them in the same method book if the method fits their learning style.
My approach to teaching is as individual as each student. It is important that each student learns at their own pace and in their learning style. It is my job to see what the student's best playing is and push them a little past it. I help my students set goals in their lessons, both broad goals of learning pieces, and specific parts of each piece for their weekly practice. Helping students find practice strategies is a love of mine; it looks different on each student, and I instruct based on these differences.
