Overview:
Having played piano from a young age, music has always been a big part of my life. I was classically trained in piano for 12 years, from age 5 through the end of high school. During college, I was able to continue independently building upon my musical abilities because of my strong foundation in music and previous years of training. I took several music courses at Chaffey College, which contributed to my earning an Associate's degree in University Studies: Arts and Humanities, after which I transferred to California Polytechnic University, Pomona where I graduated with my Bachelor's degree in Geography. Throughout my high school and college years, I played in a few church bands and was presented with many opportunities for solo performances. Oftentimes, the music I played during services and at events was arranged by myself. Although I am classically trained, my musical strengths include playing by ear and creating my own arrangements of my favorite songs. I also love to study music theory and history, especially the history of jazz.
EXPERIENCE
I first started teaching piano when I was just 16 years old. I began with only one student and eventually gained more and more students through referral. I have now been teaching piano for 8 years and have significantly increased my clientele through word of mouth only before teaching with Musika. Much of my experience is in teaching young children who are absolute beginners, since most of my students have started with me having no previous musical experience. I currently teach beginner and intermediate level students of all ages.
METHODS USED
For children who are beginner students, I use the Alfred's Basic Piano Library lesson books. After completion of level 1, I encourage my students to find songs they might enjoy learning outside of their lesson book. For older beginners I create unique lesson plans and assignments, based on those students' musical tastes and preferences, that help them progress at their own pace. Ultimately, I do my best to help my students learn in a fun and exciting way. With all of my students, I use the Basics of Keyboard Theory books. These books are instrumental in helping them gain a comprehensive knowledge of musical signs, terms, concepts, and history. I have found that my students are able to more easily progress through their lesson books and even transition into learning other instruments when they have a solid foundation in music theory.
LESSON STYLE
I like to make my lessons fun and somewhat laid back, yet structured and goal-oriented. Since each of my students has a unique learning style, I have made it my goal to tailor my teaching style and lesson plans for each individual I teach so that they can reach their full potential as a pianist. Additionally, I help my students set goals for themselves during each lesson that will guide their independent practice during the week. When teaching younger students, I encourage their parents to get involved in the learning process to help them reach their goals.
