Drumset performance Masters degree, Rytmisk Musikkonservatorium, Copenhagen Denmark - Drumset performance and instruction
Honors Degree from Musician's Institute (PIT), Los Angeles
Teaching is just as important to me as performing. I have been a musician and instructor for almost 40 years and love what I do. After studying with Joe Porcaro, Steve Houghton, I graduated with honors from Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, and immediately after passed the auditions to the Royal Conservatory of Music in Copenhagen, Denmark where I was fortunate enough to study with Ed Thigpen and Bent Lylloff among more. In Las Vegas, Nevada, I had the opportunity to perform with many great musicians, such as the Platters and Calamity Jayne and play for shows such as Legends in Concert. After moving to the San Francisco Bay Area I got to perform with the likeness of Keystone Revisited and Tony Saunders as well as musicians from great bands such as Tower of Power and many more.
My teaching experience dates back to when I was a kid, enjoying sharing what I had learned with other kids. While I went to Musician's Institute I was a top student and was selected to teach a class to fellow students. While studying at the Music Conservatory in Copenhagen I was teaching in 2 music schools as well as keeping private students. After moving the the United States I kept up teaching private students as well at teaching at music schools all the way until today for a total of about 35 years of experience. I focus on the joy of music as well as a building confidence and always look for ways to help my students use what they are learning. This could be by joining a band, participating in competitions, concerts and last but not least creating their own music. I regularly arrange workshops, master classes and recitals for my students to enjoy their own progress and accomplishments and also see just how far the other students have come. This tends to be extremely inspiring for them.
I have a great collection of the best drum books made and use the most suitable, depending on the needs of each individual student. The goal is always for each student to reach his/her fullest potential, while enjoying all the joy and magic that creating music has to offer. There are 3 areas I generally cover in each lesson to ensure a well rounded experience. These are technique/rudiments, reading and beats/fills/songs. This is done in person or in my state of the art online teaching studio with several camera angles and recording studio quality audio. Each student gets a customized lesson plan based on what they are interested in or need for school or a band for example. Beyond that I see my job as providing inspiration, guidance, knowledge and fun to make sure the inherent fun and love of the instrument always comes first and is never ever lost.
I have learned that when students have fun, they practice more. When they practice more, they become really, really good. That approach translates in to an customized lesson plan for each student and has been successful as my students have become professional musicians in their own rights, won prestigious awards and passing almost every single audition. The reputation I have gained from all the many years and success stories have given me a waitlist and a full time teaching schedule almost constantly as well as my full time performance schedule. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing my students happy and passionate about their drumming.
