BM, Lawrence University, Double Bass Performance (with a Jazz Emphasis)
2011 - Study Abroad, Amsterdam Conservatory
I am a passionate and dedicated instructor who loves working with students of any age and interest. In 2013, I graduated from Lawrence University with a Bachleor of Music in Double Bass Performance (with a Jazz Emphasis). While at Lawrence I studied bass with Mark Urness, jazz improvisation with Bill Carrothers and Jose Encarnacion, and compostition with Fred Sturm. In 2011, I spent a semester at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where I studied with Dutch bassist Frans van der Hoeven and bass guitar with Lene Te Voortwis. Following graduation, I have spent the last year working for Royal Caribbean International as a bass guitarist for a cruise ship (The Serenade of the Seas).
I've been a private bass instructor for a number of years now. I have had both double bass and bass guitar students. In addition, I've taught jazz improvisation to other instruments as well and have experience coaching both large and small ensembles. In 2013, I spent a summer interning as an assistant teacher for the New York Jazz Academy (NYJA). The NYJA is all ages jazz academy located in New York, NY. While at NYJA, I spent a number of hours working with and observing some of the best jazz teachers in New York. I worked privately with students and helped coached small ensebmels as well.
It is always my mission to personalize my curriculum towards my student. I accept students of any age or experience. Because I am well versed in many different styles, what ever stlye the student would like to study is up to them. All my students will be asked to focus on both a balance stylistic and technical aspects of the bass. Also students will focus on music theory and ear training as well. For classical double bass, I do stick to a number of method books depending on the level of the student. (Progressive Repetoire - George Vance, Yorke Etudes, Bottessini Etudes, and Simandl). In addition to technique excersizes and etudes, my students will also focus of solo works and orchestral excerpts. Jazz bassist will also focus on technique and some classical study. Even as a jazz bassist, it is important to learn how to use the bow and perform with excellent intonation and tone. Jazz bassist will also focus on solo transcripitions, ear training, improvistation and theory. Bass guitarist and bassist of other stlyes will also focus on technique and music theory. Depending on the stlye of the student, lessons could consist anything from learning popular and famous bass lines, improvisation, or sight reading.
Bass and music should be enjoyable and fun, and I hope I can bring that to every student. I encourage students practice everyday so that lessons can progessive and students have the opportunity to learn new and challenging music. It is my goal to create a postive learning evironment that helps a student grow to their full potential.
