My teaching experience goes all the way back to when I was in middle school. I started off as a teaching assistant for a VBS at my local church, I helped to design the lessons and taught parts of the lesson and I continued to do that for 5 years, each year doing more. In high school I began teaching Sunday School and I mixed my love of music into each of my lessons. And my love of singing and teaching led me to pursuing a music education degree that I am about to go into my senior year of at Miami University. During my time at Miami so far I have had hours of field experience getting to teach elementary, middle, and high school music classes. This involved creating and teaching my own lesson plans. This past year I took a vocal pedagogy course and part of this course was taking on college aged voice students to teach and prepare them for a recital and both of my students were successful. Since then I have continued to take on more voice students. One particular student of mine came to me to prepare for an audition to add a music/ voice major at Miami University and she was successful in being admitted!

When it comes to teaching voice, there is no one way of doing so. Each child learns differently and each child has a different instrument, and it is most important that that be figured out first. I will generally start out with well known songs sung by ear, and then depending on the students level help them to learn to read music. I will always be careful to never allow a student to sing something that is not designed for their age or their voice type. I will evaluate a student over time to see how they learn best and what their instrument sounds like and what type of music I think would suit them best.
