I am a passionate music educator with five years of public school teaching experience and ten years of private studio teaching experience. I have been in Albuquerque for seven years and have performed as a soloist and in ensembles throughout my time in New Mexico.
I started teaching voice and piano lessons while I was a student at Wartburg College. I continued teaching when I moved to New Mexico and I now have ten years of studio teaching experience. After completing my Master's Degree in Vocal Performance, I returned to UNM to attain a New Mexico Teaching License. I have been teaching elementary music in the public schools for five years since attaining that license. I have worked with students of all ages, although I would say I am particularly gifted at working with young children.
For beginning piano students, I use Alfred's All-in-one Piano Course books. These books combine repertoire and theory, thereby cutting down on the number of books a new student needs to purchase. I use a variety of materials for voice students. I may ask that my voice students purchase books of repertoire that contain songs useful for building on their strengths and working on their weaknesses. However, I also have an extensive music library in my home studio.
In lessons, I emphasize enjoying the process of learning. Learning an instrument does not happen over night. It takes years of practice and can be a joyful task if one enjoys the process. I send my students home with new goals each week to help guide their practice.
