Born and raised in NYC, I began my musical training quite early as a professional singer and clarinet player in the band program in middle school, ultimately graduating from The High School of Music and Art (LaGuardia, "Fame"). While there, my sister and I sang with a girl that later became famous and was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. I continued my musical education both in school and performing in genres of classical, rock, pop, Gospel, r&b, soul, and folk. A true mix!! Songwriting came later and currently, I have two CD's of my own with original material on both. I've been teaching all ages from 8-88 since I was 18 as a private music teacher and coach, in private and public schools and community centers. I created workshops and shows for my student's participation. Whether it's singing, learning piano, orchestral instuments or songwriting, I am delighted to bring my students where they aspire to reach.
As a 9th grader, I participated in The Bronx Borough Wide Band and played clarinet on the stage of Carnegie Hall. Later, in college, I sang in a classical chorus on the stage of Kleinhan's in Buffalo, NY with The Buffalo Philharmonic. I studied bassoon with Frank Ruggieri of The New York Philharmonic as well. In rock, I sang with many bands and some famous artists. Also, played piano in restaurants, etc.One of my bands later performed at The Capital Theatre in Port Chester, New York as an opening act for other famous artists.Very exciting!! In fact, my first CD is all about my bands. I've had two One-Woman shows Off-Broadway in which I wrote the shows as well as added an original song to the many that ended up in my show. Finally, I have appeared in France and California, too.
The curriculum that I use varies according to the various orchestral instruments, singing or piano, and of course according to the levels of ability. I work with many different technique books and workbooks to teach music notation and reading. Within 3-6 months, my students will be reading notes, understanding rhythms both complex and simple, and playing and singing anything from classical to Pop to Broadway and even writing and recording (I am a recording producer as well) their own songs, if they choose!
My approach to all my students, children and adults alike, takes on a friendly, casual appearance while at the same time utilizing my classical and technical training. I believe music is the most joyous of all "subjects" to study and my greatest desire is for my students to learn a lot while feeling the joy that music provides. Having said that, studying with me will be fun, detailed, technical and productive. I expect my students to be doing their " homework " which is practicing, always assuming that they want to be learning music because they love it too!
