Doctorate candidate in Music Performance, Master in Music, and MBA. I have been teaching trumpet and wind ensemble internationally over 20 years. My trumpet students have placed first in both regional and state competitions performing in both small and large ensembles. The wind ensembles I conducted also have participated in WASBE Conference, Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival, WMC Kerkrade, and Midwest Clinic. I have studied with some of the greatest performers and teachers in the world and have also studied both Alexander Technique and Body Mapping, which has greatly improved my own perspective on the body's effect on great tone production and efficiency. This has been extraordinarily helpful for both myself and my students. Students of all ages and ability levels are welcome!
I am passionate about helping all students be inspired to learn at their full potential. I have experience teaching at the elementary, middle, high school, and college level. I am a dedicated trumpet pedagogue with a focus of developing a strong foundation of skills for my students. In lessons with me you will get a balance of technical training as well as exposure to great repertoire at your level. I also spend adequate time working with students to help them understand how their subtle anatomy is helping or getting in the way of their tone quality and breathing. My aim is for the trumpet to be an extension of the body: Build a trumpet in the body!
For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or other method books that they have been using. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo trumpet repertoire as well as popular tunes that will easily engage with them. In addition, I will include some technical exercises to master their skills and endurance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level.
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music and find enjoyment! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace with fun. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. For younger students, I will give out stickers and small gifts as rewards.
The teacher noticed my daughter's weak point on the spot and provided very detailed instruction on how to improve it and why it needs to be worked on. The pre-lesson communication was super helpful for parents to understand teacher's philosophy and the post-lesson instruction was in great details for students to follow in her everyday practice. Hong is an excellent trumpet teacher if you are looking for a teacher who can develop instrument skill, appreciation of music, practice methodology, etc. Highly recommended!
From the moment Hong began working with our 13 year old son, we recognized how fortunate we are to have found him. Hong is a wonderfully kind, patient and knowledgeable instructor who has developed a great rapport with our son, meeting him just where he is - supporting and challenging him as needed. Our son loves practicing now and looks forward to his trumpet lessons each week. We'd give 10 stars if we could. Thank you so much!
