Overview:

I am a caring and motivated instructor of violin who loves working with students of all ages and sharing my love of music. In 1993 I graduated from Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma with a Bachelor's in Music Education with emphasis in music therapy. After nearly a decade of practicing as a music therapist, which gave me valuable insight into developing a personalized style of teaching taylored to the student's learning style, I realized that Suzuki Violin Instruction was my true calling. I studied Suzuki Violin Pedagogy with Marilyn O'Boyle, Ann Montzka-Smelser, and Judy Bossuat-Gallic through the Suzuki Association of the Americas.

EXPERIENCE

I was invited to be an instructor in 2008 and started after I completed my first pedagogy class in Suzuki Violin with the Jonesboro Suzuki Institute in Arkansas in August of 2010. I am currently teaching both children and adults virtually as they all live more than 100 miles away. These three students have been with me for more than 5 years, including 1 adult. Encouraging my students to regularly listen to the repertoire and to listen to different high quality artists for inspiration and to help develop and train their ear. These experiences have been the greatest joy of my life and it's my hope to spread that joy further.

METHODS USED

For beginner students, they learn through the Suzuki method, parents are to take notes during lessons so that they can effectively help their child at home. For parents of children ages 2-4, the parent is encouraged to learn the violin as well. This is so that the Suzuki Triangle works effectively. Parents play a key role in every aspect of their child's learning and development of their violin skills. After the student has completed Suzuki Violin School book 1, I then add supplemental music for them to learn and if the student is older, they are encouraged to choose styles, genres, etc.

LESSON STYLE

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs.. With all of my students, I will make sure that they are able to demonstrate a concept before learning a new one. I don't allow the use of the word "Can't" because Every Child Can.
