I'm an Austin, TX-born and based composer and multi-instrumentalist. Initially self-taught, I went on to study guitar with John Dearman (Los Angeles Guitar Quartet), Molly Miller (Jason Mraz, Black Eyed Peas), Thomas Echols, Dragos Ilie (Austin Guitar Quartet), and Adam Holzman at The Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin where I earned my BM. I am fluent in styles ranging from classical, jazz, and rock. In addition to teaching, I am an active performer and composer, playing weddings and private events and composing film scores.
I have over 20 years experience playing music, including saxophone, bass clarinet, Guitar, bass, piano, ukulele and drums. I attended the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin where I received a full ride and earned my Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Music Studies with Guitar as my primary instrument. In addition to my own studies, I have been teaching for the last 2 years.I am also an experienced performer and composer, playing weddings, art galleries, and private events and writing songs and composing film scores.
For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Guitar Method One. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, including being able to read both staff and tab and have some basic playing technique , I will begin to introduce solo repertoire. For adult students, I like to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Whether it's Bach or the Beatles, I'm eager to help you on your musical journey
My favorite part about teaching is seeing my students grow as musicians. I approach each student differently as I believe each student requires a different approach. Music means something different to everyone, and I want to teach you what you want to learn. Whether you're a beginner looking to learn the basics of reading music or an experienced musician looking to take your playing to the next level, I'm eager to share my experience and knowledge in helping you reach your goals on your musical journey.
Very knowledgeable about pretty much everything around guitar and music theory. Whatever question you have, he knows the answer and will work through the technical details with you. He’s very patient and makes practicing feel fun and fulfilling!
Ian is an incredibly talented musician and teacher, I cannot recommend him highly enough.
Ian has an undying passion for music. He has diverse musical talents, as well as a valuable and unique perspective. He is also an exceptionally generous man, self-evidently highly intelligent, joyously outgoing, and steadfastly dependable. He strives to meaningfully grow his students’ knowledge and works until they learn not just some thing, but the right thing. He offers patience, kindness, respect, and seeks to spread joy. These qualities make Ian a great music teacher.
I have worked with Ian for over a year. Learning music at age 27 has been a huge challenge for me, but Ian did a great job of keeping me motivated and making it fun. He distilled music theory into simple terms and helped me learn songs I never dreamed of playing. Good instructors are able to take difficult concepts and simplify them for their student. Ian did a phenomenal job of this and I can’t recommend him enough.
