Overview:

My name is Igor and I’m a musician first, composer of music, saxophonist, accordionist and rhythmist. I’ve studied Balkan and ancient Indian rhythms.

Growing up in a Communist Yugoslavia and then later in my twenties moving to New York City gave me a unique prospective of becoming a musician with wide spectrum of influences. If I could describe my work I would say it is about bringing the musical language of native Slovenia and Eastern Europe into the idiom of modern music. In year 2000 I was invited by one of the world’s finest bassists, Reggie Workman, to study at the New School University in New York City. I received a scholarship and moved to New York in fall 2000. In New York I trained with some of the world’s finest musicians—George Garzone, Reggie Workman, Buster Williams, Chico Hamilton and many others. In April 2002, I was selected for the New School All-Star Wayne Shorter Ensemble, which performed at the “Beacons In Jazz” award ceremony at the Supper club, where Mr. Shorter was honoured.

EXPERIENCE

Igor performed at jazz festivals in Ljubljana, Belgrade, Novi Sad, Csfero, at major jazz clubs in New York including the Jazz Standard, Cornelia Street Cafe, Supper Club, Birdland; and venues all over the world with such jazz legends as Reggie Workman, John Abercrombie, Chico Hamilton.

In 2011 I was commissioned to create a piece for a closure of European Capital of Culture. With multimedia artist Zeljka Blaksic he created “Resistance of the Earth”, which is a multimedia project that combines several artistic genres; from video, performance, 16 mm film to live music. The theme of the project covers the world of natural disasters like earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes and tornados.

Igor’s band Innertextures represents Igor's passion for the music to journey to new and daring places. He is supported in this effort by alto saxophonist Greg Ward, bassist Chris Tordini and drummer Kenny Grohowski. Igor has released four CDs as a leader: “Eleven” (2018), “Innertextures live” (2012), “Mineral Mind” (2009), and “Innertextures” (2004). In addition to his work as a performer, he has an active career as an educator, having taught master classes and improvisation lessons throughout Europe and the United States.

METHODS USED

My approach varied from student to student. I decide about it after the first lesson where I can determine what kind of steps will take. I have my own music books with songs and exercises that I have developed over last twenty years of teaching I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Also what type of music is he or she interested inn. I ask them what do they listen and what type of songs or music would they like to play. There is nothing easier especially if f the student is able to tell me what they are interested in.

LESSON STYLE

It's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Sometime I would bring my soprano or tenor saxophone with me and create music with a student by trying to show him how music works. Improvise with them play a very simple song and work on melody and rhythm whatever sparkles their interest in creating music.

Igor is an outstanding teacher! I've enjoyed studying jazz piano with Igor for a couple of months, and I can't say enough about his exceptional teaching. Igor possesses an impressive depth of knowledge in jazz piano, making complex concepts accessible and engaging. His passion for jazz music is infectious, inspiring me to explore the genre in ways I never imagined. I thought I knew Jazz, but Igor has expanded my love for Jazz even more. His feedback is constructive and motivating. I liked when he suggested doing the jam session even though my piano skill is close to zero he always makes it really fun and engaging. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to grow as a jazz pianist, or just looking to learn jazz. He's your guy!
