2012- WGI Indoor Drumline Bronze Medalist
Hello! I'm a Drummer and Percussionist who loves to share the gift of rhythm and music with others. In 2010 I attended Santa Monica College where I was a member of the SMC Orchestra and Percussion Ensemble. I continued my studies on my own via private instructors and mentors from orchestral, pop, and world music backgrounds. Professionally I have performed with drum ensembles such as Street Drum Corps and the NYC broadway show STOMP. As an instructor I have taught drum set at various School of Rock locations, as well as private drum set and hand drumming lessons for ages 5-50!
Prior to making the transition to a full time musician, I was a swim and surf instructor for children and adults! This experience greatly prepared me for teaching music. I learned a lot about patience, communication, and having fun which is what I've been incorporating into my 3 years of teaching drums and percussion. I also have experience with different age groups, cultural backgrounds, and children with disabilities. I've taught children age 5 up to 17, I have basic conversational French and Spanish speaking skills, and I have experience with children with Autism, Aspergers, Down Syndrome and ADHD. I've found that regardless of the situation I love to show my students new ways to experience music and life!
When I receive a new student the first thing I do is assess where they are technically and what their interests are. From there I develop custom lesson plans that are design to improve a certain technique while learning new music. For example if a student comes in and really loves Michael Jackson's music but doesn't know how to hold the drumsticks or read music, I will give them basic exercises to improve their lack of technical ability and then we'll apply it to a song. Even if the student has no particular interest in a genre or artist I can help them find something they like, while still teaching technique and creativity!
I use patience, clear communication, and having fun to get knowledge across to my students! To me music is about connection and expression, and my goal is to get my students to feel that! I also understand that learning new things can make you vulnerable and frustrated so I try to be more relatable as opposed to an authority figure with my students. However, if I see that a student is not respecting themselves and their goals (not practicing, discouraging behavior) I will be a bit more strict in order to motivate them. Overall my teaching style is to help guide my students towards achieving their musical goals and having fun while doing it!
Indigo is by far one of the best drum teacher my children ever had. After their first lesson my 10 and 12 years old couldn't wait for their next class. In a short period of time Indigo made my kids more confident and love music even more! I am very impressed Indigo is amazing not only as a teacher but as a person who genuinely cares!
Indigo is a superstar Drum’s instructor, she’s been a great instructor and mentor for my son. I am glad that we have her. Thank you Indigo.
Indigo is awesome. I practically don’t have any music background and she took on the challenge. Plus i asked her to tech me an instrument that she has not have much experience with. The handpan is what I wanted to learn and since is practically a hand drum , she enthusiastically agrees to tech me. I have been taking classes with her via FaceTime and Skype for few months and I have improved drastically. She is a vast knowledge of music theory and she also very engaging. She is always challenging me to learn more and she makes it fun. I would recommend her without hesitation.
would recommend for sure! Empowering to have a female teacher for drums.
