I have been a professional teacher and musician for 30 years. As a young man I traveled all around the world on cruise ships playing shows. Then, I aggressively pursued a free-lance career as a jazz trumpeter in New York City. I have always taught private lessons and I enjoy the challenge of reaching the student to inspire them to improve. Hopefully it will be fun as well. I have a proven method for teaching beginning piano students and I have extensive experience teaching the trumpet as well. I have performed with Aretha Franklin at the Apollo Thearter, and with Billy Crystal at the Mark Twain Awards!!
My mother was a trumpet and piano teacher and I grew up with lessons going on in the house constantly. My father was an English teacher for 35 years! I have enjoyed thirty years of private lessons, teaching all ages a variety of styles of music! My sister is a violinist that plays in the Stanford Symphony! I have also taught in several different music stores. I taught for several years at Munroe Music in Huntington, and in Northport on Long Island. Although I try to make the lessons fun, I do strongly encourage my students to try to practice some every day, so that we can learn the material and graduate to new fresh material! Come try a lesson with me!!!
For beginning piano students, I use a series of books designed for beginners called Dozen a Day. It is very organized and it teaches the student in a very clear way. For my trumpet students I use Arbans, Clarkes. Schlossberg, and 45 years of experience playing trumpet. As to a philosophy of teaching, I believe in never ever being mean to the student as that causes a negative experience. Instead of the mean strict scolding method, I prefer an upbeat positive 'you can do it ' approach!!
My approach to teaching is a logical one. The student needs to learn to "crawl', and then to 'walk" and then to run. With an organized succession of excersizes, the student can learn the basics of the instrument which will lead to the ability to play more fun songs. That is the goal of learning the instrument; to be able to eventually play some fun music!! The student will get an assignment written in their lesson book, and will learn that lesson for the next lesson . It really comes down to a combination of the lessons and the work at home done by the student that all adds up to steady improvement!!
