Overview:
I am a musician, composer, and educator with backgrounds in both jazz and classical studies. I have a Bachelors of Music from New England Conservatory and a Masters of Music at Berklee College of Music's Global Jazz Institute. I am regularly performing in a wide variety of settings from jazz to avant-garde to hip hop and anything in between. Some of my past teachers include Susan Hagen, Dave Holland, John Patitucci, Cecil McBee, Danilo Perez, Frank Carlberg, and Jason Moran among others. I have remained as passionate about my teaching as I am about my art and constantly strive to do both to the best of my ability.
EXPERIENCE
As part of my graduate and undergraduate studies I regularly taught both locally and abroad to students of all ages, skill levels, and backgrounds. I have also maintained a steady private studio, teaching individual lessons to students for over five years. My teaching style has a strong emphasis on developing and maintaining engagement and excitement with the subject. I believe that a positive attitude is essential to a student’s growth and it is my responsibility as a teacher to develop that attitude.
METHODS USED
My primary goal with all of my students is to help them make great music that is true to themselves. I also try to stick with a sound-before-symbol approach to learning music. What this means for my teaching is a focus on training both the ears and technique. I always prefer a more personalized approach to teaching, working with students to find repertoire that speaks to them and improves their musicality and technique. Furthermore, it is both my belief and my experience that any student is capable of learning given the proper instruction and tools. Therefore I consider it my responsibility to ensure results from my students, not only helping them to progress while studying with me, but also providing them with the tools to teach themselves and take on any challenge.
LESSON STYLE
I have seen how music education helps my students become great thinkers, community leaders and artists themselves. As a teacher, I strive to engage students by nurturing their passion and curiosity for the arts and learning as a whole. It is my goal to help my students take what they learn through music and apply those skills to other areas in their lives, much as many of my mentors have done with me. In turn I hope to inspire the next generation of great thinkers and creators. Ensuring that my students develop and maintain a positive attitude towards music and learning remains at the core of my teaching.
