I am a currently attending SJSU for my Music Education degree. My main instrument is trombone, but I also teach beginning piano among other instruments. I love teaching, and I enjoy seeing my students learn and grown in their love and passion for music. I also currently teach at various schools around South San Jose. My passion on top of teaching is also advocating for music and groups who may not have access. I believe everyone should have the chance to learn an instrument as it is another way to connect to individuals in a deeper way.
My teaching experience began in my first year of college teaching beginning piano. I have since grown my studio from there to teaching trombone. I encourage students to be passionate about what they play while also balancing what we learn through various method books. I found I improved the most when I was playing music I enjoy rather than playing the music that was given to me by my piano teacher. I also only ask that if my students aren't passionate about practicing that practice at least 5 - 10 minutes a day. Just by practicing that much shows that the student is committed to learning and working on growing as a musician.
For my students on I usually have them play out of the Alfred's Basic Piano Library. For other instruments we usually look at where students levels are at and work from there. From there I find what they like to practice and work on so they are able to grow. I also give my students scales each week to work on to use as warm-ups and build their dexterity. For my students we also look at the theory behind the music we are playing and use various theory worksheets that work on rhythm or we work out of a basic theory book that works best for the student. I am not a strict teacher, and I will not push them past what they want to do. If they have the drive to work at being a better musician, then I can work and grow that.
I really try to work with the student with where they are at or where they want to go with their music. I was a slow learner on piano, so I can understand how confusing and frustrating it can be at times to learn an instrument. I really work to make sure that the students under stand the basics because that will outlast me when I am long gone from their life. As a teacher I want the things that I teach my students to long out last me whether, so when they pick up their instrument again, they can remember what they learned and practiced on their instrument with me.
She is very passionate about her work, and she gets along with her students well.
