I currently hold the position as the Director of Bands in the DeKalb County Schools. I am also the Department Chair of the Fine Arts and Connections Department where I oversee the instructional practices of over ten teachers. As Director of Bands, I am responsible for all aspects of the band program which includes, but is not limited to implementing differentiated instructional practices, recruitment, and community engagement/cluster alignment. I am also an Adjunct Professor at Saint Leo University where I am responsible for instructional courses in Music.
I hold a Masters of Music in Instrumental Conducting from Reinhardt University, Waleska, Georgia a Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Music Education from Georgia State University, Atlanta, Georgia, and am currently pursuing a Doctor of Education in Music Education and Tier I Educational Leadership certification at the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia.
As a professional trumpet player, I have performed in many musical mediums from symphony orchestras, brass quintets to salsa bands. I am currently active in the Atlanta area as a clinician and as a freelance trumpet player. In addition to performing professionally, I am a active member of the Georgia Wind Symphony and also maintain a private studio of all ages and playing abilities. In addition to my work as a professional musician and public school educator I also serve as a adjunct professor at a local university.
My Method of teachings depends on the ability level of each student. If a beginner student has never played an instrument we will start out in Essential Elements, Standards of Excellence or the Tradition of Excellence Book which most public school program use! With intermediate and advanced students we will use methods and books that deal with the each instrument specific idiomatic needs and skill sets. With Brass instrument we would use the Arban's Complete Conservatory Method and Clark Technical Studies book .
I am teacher who sets realistic goals to the individual students learning style, learning objective, and learning pace. I am a teacher who believes in positive motivation but believes in promoting each student to have intrinsic motivation. I believe in using technology combined with traditional methods to challenge and promote growth in each of students. I also like exposing my students to as many style of music so that their understand and knowledge is massive enough to function in any musical setting.
