Montclair State University, Trumpet Performance
I'm an enthusiastic and motivated instructor who loves having the opportunity to assist my students in building not only their skill, but also to build their love for music to match or even surpass my own. A strong love and desire are very important in teaching because if you don't enjoy what you're doing, your student won't either. I have had the opportunity to perform and be featured at many venues including the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York, the Rutgers University- New Brunswick Jazz competition and Jazz camp. I have also had the honor of performing in many pit orchestras across the New York and New Jersey area.
My teaching experience dates back to my junior year of high school. I first began providing private lessons to local children that attended the local middle school that I had also attended myself. Consistency is the most important thing that I have stressed to all of my students. Consistency in practicing is vital to training your lips, fingers, and lungs to match what you have in your mind. I have also found that younger students enjoy playing pop and jazz more than they enjoy classical pieces. I try to incorporate all of these into my curriculum so that my students can keep a wide range of interests and thus continually set new goals spanning in all directions. I am always looking for new students so that I can help them to feel the way that I do about my precious instrument.
For nearly all of my students, I start with Arban's Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet so that I can truly understand the students level of understanding of music and also get a grasp of their playing technique. From there, I will branch out to find something that suits both the students ability as well as their interests. Regardless of their ability, though, I always duet with my students to make them feel less pressure during lessons. This can also help the students' confidence in playing as well as their ability to listen to people playing around them and adjust. These are vital skills for playing in any setting.
It is a very special experience to be able to see a student progress. Depending on the frequency of the lessons, I will set goals for the student to reach by the time the next lesson occurs. I always make the goals realistic for the student and I try my best to make the goal something that the student will enjoy. This will also help them to practice more frequently and work harder towards reaching this goal. I always make sure to get a firm grasp on what the students likes and dislikes are so that I can assist them the best that I can.
