Coming from a family of musicians, I know how good music is for the soul. I have studied music since I was 6 years old and having two music professors as my parents, music has always been present in my life. I did my undergraduate studies in Brazil at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) and after graduating, served as visiting assistant professor there, acting as sabbatical replacement for Professor José de Oliveira. I also have passion for community service, and worked as a volunteer music teacher for the ”Program for Access to Technical Education Employment”, where I taught music to students living in property and provided social assistance to people with disabilities and indigenous peoples. In 2017, I came to Tucson in pursuit of my Master’s degree, where I performed in the prestigious Fred Fox Graduate Wind Quintet and also served as the graduate teaching assistant (GTA) for the UA Flute Studio. During my studies, I also performed as principal flutist of the Arizona Symphony Orchestra and UA Wind Ensemble. I have experience teaching all ages and have also worked with disabled students. I would love to be your next teacher!
My inspiration as a music teacher comes from the smiles of all my students. Whether that be from teaching their favorite pop song or classical repertoire, the joy from teaching always keeps me motivated. My volunteer work with several projects for young students in poverty simply stress the importance of music, and how it is linked to the development of the brain. If listening to music is such a brain workout, imagine playing it, imagine making it yourself! It is with that philosophy that I don’t only teach how to play instruments, but also stress the importance of music theory and improvisation as complementary disciplines. My teaching philosophy has proven its value with several students winning competitions in not only Brazil but also internationally.
My methodology is inspired by the Suzuki method, which believes that learning music is similar to how humans learn to speak first, and write later. In the end, music is a type of language. Having said that, I always have a conversation with my students, and/or their parents, to learn what artists they listen to, what their favorite songs are and what goals they want to achieve. As a result, my lessons are catered distinctively to each unique student, but what they all have in common will be a passion for music!
I am extremely dedicated to my students. Understanding how exciting it is to play with accompaniment, I have played piano for multiple student recitals in order for them to learn collaborative skills as well. The piano is also a great way to teach harmony, music theory and improvisation because of its a visual and kinaesthetic elements. When a piano is not available, I make arrangements in my notation software, so that they can still gain the skills and experience, therefore having the music making process a more emotionally rewarding activity.
Ivo demonstrates impeccable teaching ability in both in-person and online lessons (due to the COVID-19 mitigation). He devotes an incredible amount of effort to teaching and is able to adapt easily to the different skill sets of each unique student. His experience as a volunteer teacher to visually impaired students and students in extreme poverty with the national program PRONATEC makes him not only an outstanding teacher, but also a fantastic person. In addition, his success as a competitive soloist has truly inspired me and many others to become greater musicians.
