I love sharing the joys of music with people. Teaching others helps me to learn about my own instruments as music is an ever-evolving, ever-learning art form. I appreciate motivated and dedicated students. I have a wealth of knowledge of all genres or music but, for the voice, I only teach classical, musical theater and jazz techniques. If you are looking to learn to sing Pop or R&B, I am not the right instructor for you.
I am a light lyric tenor and I enjoy performing when and where I can.
I have been coaching singers and teaching piano since my college days. I have been teaching private lessons for more than 15 years now. I specialize in classical singing, particularly the soprano voice. I have a wealth of knowledge in repertoire and technique. I have a strong background in musical theater as well. I enjoy inspiring singers to learn about their instruments and I encourage my students to ask questions and explore new things. I do not teach singers under the age of 12 because I feel that the voice isn't ready for classical training at such a young age. I enjoy teaching pianists of all levels and ages. Younger children (6 and up) are encouraged to begin with piano as their first instrument. Regardless of your age or level of experience, I can help you learn in a fun and engaging way.
All of my singers work through the exercises by Mathilde Marchesi as they are the backbone of bel canto and good healthy singing. I encourage my vocalists to explore different styles and techniques to find the best fit for their instruments. I also teach theory and sight singing using various different methods and tools. I am a big believer in encouraging my singers to do research on the pieces they are performing.
For pianists, I begin children with the Bastien method as it is a tried and true piano method that has been used by teachers for decades. For adult learners, there are various methods out there and I work with my adult students in an initial lesson to determine what method will be the best fit.
My teaching style is nurturing and supportive. Music is an emotional art, regardless of the instrument you are performing. I like to encourage my students to think about the music they are playing and to think about the music they hear every single day out in the world. I like my students to be musically adventurous and open to new ideas and new styles. I love when my students ask questions and begin to understand the why and how of the way music, and their instrument, works. I like to guide my students, but I always let them lead the way.
