I started playing in the 4th grade. I played in R&B bands in high school and enrolled at Berklee College of Music where I have a Bachelor Degree in Composition. I also studied privately with Charles Banacos (increible piano and jazz teacher), Jerry Bergonzi, Joe Viola, Joe Allard ( whose Saxophone methods I teach, who was the teacher of every major saxophone player in his day including Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Michael Brecker, and countless others ) , learned circle breathing from Rahsaan Roland Kirk, recorded 2 albums at Grammavision with Al Macdowell (Bass player for 40 years with Ornette Coleman). recodered and learned as much as I could grasp from Don Cherry and Ornette. Perform proffesionally to this day.
I teach begginers to professionals. On saxophone I empathize what I have learned from everywhere but especially Joe Allard, his methods have proved to be exceptional in getting a desirable sound and achieving technique on the saxophones. Tone and harmonics are essential for saxophone. i have been teaching in my home studio for over 10 years. Living in NY I help students prepare for NSYMA. Last year I had two students at level 5 one scored a 99 the other a 94. Now they are both studing level 6.
I work with students to get them to a level where they can enoy the music they like. I want my students to bring music thay want to explore and I work with them to be able to play with enthusiasm. Music is an endless science as one of my professors said "The more you learn the more you realize what you don't know". Tone and harmonics are essential for saxophone playing. What I learned from Joe Allard was based on how Adolphe Sax and Sigurad Rasher built the saxophone. There is a 4 octave range on the saxophone but you need to work hard to achieve that range.
I am a very patient teacher. I set goals for my students but I help them progress at their own pace. I encourage them to learn the proven methods and to search what they are interested in learning. Learning every aspect of music is incouraged. There are proven teaching methods for learning the blues and improvisation, with knowledge of the right notes to play on what chords. Tone, armature, and breathing properly are important. Rhythms can be complicated but with guidance can be accomplished quickly. How to play eight notes properly is very important, There are different styles and a student has to find where they are most comfortable.
