Overview:
I started taking piano lessons at age 7. I studied music and French at UNI, taking piano and harpsichord lessons, and studying French in France one summer. After graduating from UNI,with a degree in music, I started teaching in Exira, Ia, and taught there 8 years. When I was chosen for a graduate assistant ship in music theory and group piano, I went back to UNI to get my Masters degree, and took organ lessons there. After graduating, I came to Belmond to teach vocal music, and remained there until I retired in June. Since retiring, I have continued with my position as All State Chorus chair, have worked with students on their music, done some accompanying for area schools, and continued my church choir and bell choir directing positions.
EXPERIENCE
My experience has been primarily in choral music, working with students in the concert choir, show choir, musical theater, solo and small ensemble, one act and full length play genres. My students learned to be successful performers through dedication and discipline. I tried to give them many opportunities through performance to become better human beings as well as better performers. I encourage them to be excellent and enthusiastic musicians, and passionate life long musicians.
METHODS USED
When I have worked with vocal students , we usually have a specific goal in mind, like all state auditions or solo contest, and so I use the appropriate literature for that. beginning piano students, I use a variety of methods, from the Schaumburg, Bastien, Thompson, LoKnoPlay methods. As the students progress we will move to the classical masters like Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, etc, as well as modern arrangers of pop music like Lorie Line.
LESSON STYLE
There is no substitute for practice, hard work, discipline, and organization. That said, music also has to be fun and enjoyable. I hope I can combine both aspects to encourage my students passion and musical gifts.
