Course Work: BENNETT COLLEGE
I've been playing piano since age 7. I started playing with a promise to my parents, they would never have to tell me to practice in turn they brought a piano for. I still have and practice on. I have taken lessons up until College, where I graduated from Bennett College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. I play on a regular basis at the Greater First Baptist Church of Washington DC. Piano on the 1st Sunday and the Pipe Organ on the 2nd Sunday. I have a passion for music and enjoy sharing it with others. Though I'm not univeristy trained, I am practical and passionate about what I do.
My teaching experience really started With the DC Youth Orchestra Program as a cellist. Assisting the cello teaches with summer sessions. I also assisted at NC A & T State University Orchestra. I mentored student teachers with string ensemble. Currently, I am Assistant to the Minister of Music at The Greater First Baptist Church of Washington DC. There my duties vary, from preparing the choir (teaching), playing piano and pipe organ; assist with the selecting of music for morning service; staging musicial presentations. In this position I have the opportunity of utilizing the musical training in different and creative ways.
I have started students with John Thompson's piano series and Alfred's basic piano series. I have found using the best of each music series has been beneficial. The introduction to theory and different genre of music helps to keep students interested. So just one basic piano book may not be enough. Adults and youth with a little experience, I have used a the Piano lessons series. This series of books allow students who are self starters to progress faster. Students that are comfortable with the piano books they currently have, I have used as well.
I believe in the student progressing at their own pace. I am the coach helping them develop their skills and passion for the art. When the student sets the pace he/she are more likely to reach the goals we set together and he/she can be more involved in the learning process. I am their to encourage him/her and acknowledge their accomplishments. It's all abut the enjoyment of music with no pressure. Once I retire from pharmacy, I plan to volunteer and work with young musicians either in the schools or with DC Youth Orchestra to encourage and mentor these young people as they develop their skills and passion.
