Overview:
I'm a recent resident of the Asheville area who enjoys working with musicians eager to grow in their unique styles of playing, as well as those who share a love of music, a desire to learn, and a passion for what they do. I graduated in December of 2017 from the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University with a Bachelor of Science in Music Industry Studies (Recording and Production) with a concentration in Jazz Guitar. I have been playing guitar since 2004, with styles ranging from Punk and Metal to Jazz and R&B. I've had the opportunity to work in a number of professional studios, as both a producer/engineer and session player. My personal music project, Art Wavey, blends styles of R&B, Jazz, Soul, Funk, Hip Hop, and New Age. In addition to this project, I have had the blessing of playing with a number of artists such as Blake McGrath, Go Home, and Joe Lally.
EXPERIENCE
My spark of inspiration to teach comes from my years performing in college as part of my own band, as well as jazz ensemble and guitar ensemble. My first experience with teaching came from my first live shows with Art Wavey. As a songwriter, another duty often times overlooked is teaching the parts needed to complement the song. By explaining the theory behind the compositions in a clear, concise way, as well through direct representation through playing, I was able to convey complex ideas in a way that not only transferred to those being taught, but made it enjoyable as well. I've learned from experience that when a lesson isn't enjoyable or engaging, less information is retained, and it becomes difficult to improve. By providing a solid foundation of understanding, as well as material that makes proper use of such information, lessons can be a fun, fruitful experience in the life of a student of music.
METHODS USED
When I meet a new student, I ask them about their music tastes, as well as their perceived level of skill. This allows me to have a clearer picture as to which route to take with teaching. For students who are just starting their journey into music, I tend to bring material and resources from my own experiences and material. By starting from the basic language of music theory (scales, melody, harmony, etc) a solid foundation is formed for their curiosity to lead them to where they want to learn in music. For more experienced students who may or may not understand theory, I dive a little deeper into theoretical concepts, as well as pull material from the Hal Leonard Real Book (a book of jazz standards from a number of eras). I find this provides students with the means to grasp composition, theory, improvisation, and group chemistry; all invaluable concepts for students of music.
LESSON STYLE
I think above all else, the passion for music and growth is important to maintain in a learning environment. I make a point to give students materials and goals that are obtainable, yet challenging, in order to fully engage them in the learning process. Having a relaxed, malleable teaching style allows the lessons to take the form of what is needed for the individual, thereby creating an environment that not only allows the student to feel welcome, but inspired and motivated to reach such goals.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
