Associate Degree: Milwaukee Area Technical College
I believe music to be the purest form of expression of the soul and the most useful tool we have to provide insight into the ideas and feelings we cannot find words for. These beleifs reflect directly in how I feel music should be taught. I am graduate of the Milwaukee Area Technical College Music Occupations Program and have 20 years experience with performance and teaching. I have toured the midwest with various artists, but my true passion is for spreading the gift of music to all who would receive it.
I started teaching music as soon as I got involved with playing and performing with other musicians. I payed great detail to how others taught me as I found it to be useful to not only learn how to play music, but to teach myself to play music through observing how others taught me. In doing so I was able to determine what worked best for me and what didn't, but I also came to the realization that others have particular strengths and weaknesses when It comes to learning as I will explain in My Methods. I received a formal education in music occupations, and during that time I taught others as well. For the entirety of my musical journey there has been a cycle of receiving knowledge and giving knowledge to people of various ages and talent ranges.
I believe in getting at the core of how each individual learns. This can be done for all age ranges and talent levels. Once I have a good idea of learning style of a person, I find it much easier for them to learn and understand concepts. This is done with an emphasis on communication not only about music, but about other interests in all walks of life. Music lessons run through these concepts, but I am always paying attention to how a person might receive and idea. Lesson are always dependent on the wants and requirements of the student. If they are already familiar with fundamentals, we can begin on a more advanced topic. This will be evident through communication.
I am not just the teacher, I am also the student. My job as such is to learn how best to communicate and deliver what the student wants to learn. I do this by focusing on how each particular student learns best. No two people are the same and neither should be the lessons delivered to them. Lesson done with me a constant cycle of me teaching a student music, and the student teaching me how to best teach the student. I believe that with patience and determination, one can accomplish anything they set their mind to, and this idea permeates my teaching style.
