BM, Cornish College of the Arts, (double major) Composition and Piano Performance
I am a professional musician and composer who plays a variety of instruments in a huge variety of styles. I enjoy and have experience composing and performing a huge range of styles, from jazz to classical, from rock to latin, and from electronic and ambient to avant-garde chamber music and experimental music. Naturally, I enjoy teaching all of it as well.
My teaching experience began at age 16, where I was already teaching multiple instruments (trombone and piano). Although college stifled my ability to teach, I have since graduated and wish to return to it.
For beginning brass players I generally start out with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements series of books. After going through that, with some other material on the side, such as performance pieces, etc, they would progress to the Arban book (at around high school age for the student who began in sixth grade, as I did). For piano, I much prefer starting out with basic fundamentals, but not to any specific method, in contrast to brass. I haven't found a method I particularly like, or think is effective, so I usually teach my own method, which is very responsive to what the student needs, while still getting in the basics.
I am a very flexible and reactive teacher. I try my best to tailor to each student's needs at a very specific level. If that requires not doing any sort of predetermined method, so be it.
